Presenting paper 'Layers of visuality: storytelling in the era of instant cinema'
Abstract:
The omnipresence of cameras and ubiquitous image production creates ever more layers of visual information at an ever-faster pace. Cameras probe deeper in our collective and personal worlds, changing the way we see ourselves. As the interval between the filmed event and its mediatisation shortens, reality and fiction begin to merge. This is the context in which I find myself as a filmmaker filming on a mobile phone.
Starting with some examples of my practice I will touch upon my approach to editing and storytelling and discuss the questions I asked myself during the making of my film People I Could Have Been and Maybe Am. This includes some of the larger ethical questions connected to filming in 'factual' space.
With respect to the performative aspect of my work, I will speak about what I call the camera's social dynamic as a means of consolidating the reality in front of the lens, the one behind it, as well as inside the narrative structure of the film.
