INSTALLATION VIEWS OF SOLO EXHIBITION, MINDFIELDS AT KIASMA MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART,
HELSINKI, FINLAND CURATED BY GUY BRETT in 2002

MINDFIELDS
A mindfield as mental space: boundless, open, associative, transcendent, entropic; a mindfield as corporeal space: ecstatic, seductive, instinctive, erotic, atropic; a mindfield as material space: absolute, historical, hermetic; a mindfield as hybrid space: disorienting, layered, subversive.

In 2003, London-based writer Guy Brett curated a show of my work at the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki. This show came about on the invitation of Maaretta Jaukkuri, Chief Curator of the museum. The exhibition was organised around a number of drawings from my Topography series. Among them was a drawing, entitled 'Mindfields'. This drawing provided the thematic framework for new work made for the specific museum space. Going back to Goethe's cognitive ideas, as expressed in the famous sentence Wär nicht das Auge sonnenhaft, die Sonne könnt es nie erblicken,* I wanted to speculate on the idea of a ‘mindfield’ which I saw as a latent, pattern within the mind, prefiguring our perception. The works in the exhibition represented models of possible mindfields. The central work was a finely printed text covering a wall of 10x 9m. This text was a mad attempt to describe the interconnectedness of all phenomenons in the universe.
